Requirements to become a Classroom Teaching Assistant

Do I need qualifications?


Generally, you don’t need qualifications to become a Teaching Assistant; however, it does work as a great advantage and will make you stand out from the crowd. It is recommended to have the relevant work experience within a school environment, as it reassures your future employer that you are a confident individual and know how teachers organise classrooms and lessons.


Below are some main requirements of a teaching assistant:

  • You must have great writing, reading and numeracy skills.
  • Experience working with children, students and infants.
  • Have a good standard of GCSE grades – Maths, English and Science in particular.
  • You will be DBS checked by the school. They are a Disclosure and Barring service check and you must pass this to be able to work in the school.
