We are looking for experienced Teaching Assistants, keen to develop their abilities to support students with hearing impairments.

Starting in September 2019, this role is to work in a Centre for the Deaf in Hounslow. Based on the mainstream site of this OFSTED rated Outstanding Primary school, you will be working with students aged 7-11 years old with severe to profound levels of deafness. Operating for over 30 years, the centre is well established and resourced to meet the needs of hearing impaired students. The centre adopts a Total Communication approach, with all staff using a range of communication strategies. However as this is a specialist unit, all staff are expected to hold a qualification in British Sign Language to a minimum of level 2.

The centre aims to support hearing impaired pupils to take a full and active part in school life, achieving the best outcomes in their academic development and social well-being. There is a focus on developing independent learning and ensuring all students have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum.

Inclusion is central to the focus of staff at this school. Deaf children work and play alongside their hearing peers and the mainstream site also has classes with acoustic tiling to aid listening conditions. As much as possible, children are supported in mainstream classes with a Radio Aid system. When required, children are supported in the centre by specialists in the areas of speech therapy, literacy, numeracy and other areas if needed. The Centre itself has four rooms, all acoustically treated to support teaching deaf children. Support in the centre is flexible and designed to adapt to the changing needs of each child.

All staff in the unit are highly qualified with mainstream and/or SEN experience. They also hold an additional qualification as a Teacher of the Deaf and a minimum of Level 2 BSL.
