Job Description

Are you a passionate, highly skilled angler and educator ready to use the therapeutic power of fishing and angling to engage vulnerable young people?

We are seeking a dedicated Specialist Instructor to lead our unique angling provision within our Alternative Provision (AP). This role involves planning and delivering practical, hands-on sessions that teach fishing techniques, water safety, and environmental awareness, while simultaneously improving the Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) and educational engagement of our students.

The Role: Angling for Engagement

This is a unique opportunity to blend outdoor education with essential pastoral support. You will be responsible for:

  • Curriculum Delivery: Planning, preparing, and delivering engaging practical and theoretical lessons covering different types of fishing, knot tying, equipment care, safety (including first aid), and fish identification.

  • Therapeutic Support: Using the calm, structured environment of fishing to develop students' patience, focus, self-regulation, and confidence.

  • Assessment and Progress: Tracking and reporting on students' progress in both technical fishing skills and key life skills (e.g., communication, resilience) developed through the activity.

  • Safety and Logistics: Managing and maintaining all angling equipment, ensuring strict adherence to water safety and safeguarding protocols at all times, including necessary risk assessments for off-site trips.

  • Accreditation: Working towards offering students relevant accreditations or awards (e.g., Angling Trust qualifications, Duke of Edinburgh, etc.) where appropriate.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to the therapeutic use of outdoor education:

  • Angling Expertise: Proven, high-level experience and skill in various forms of fishing/angling.

  • Instructional Ability: Significant, demonstrable experience as a specialist Angling Instructor, Youth Worker, or outdoor educator in an educational or youth setting.

  • SEMH Understanding: A strong empathetic understanding of the challenges faced by young people in AP settings (e.g., trauma, anxiety, challenging behaviour).

  • Safety Focused: Excellent understanding of water safety and environmental protection protocols.

  • Essential: A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle (for transporting equipment/students to off-site locations).

Why Join Our Alternative Provision?

  • Unrivalled Impact: Use a unique, practical skill to transform the engagement and well-being of young people who struggle in traditional classrooms.

  • Flexible Working: Full-time or part-time hours considered to find the right fit for the provision.

  • Supportive Team: Work within a dedicated team that values innovative and therapeutic approaches to education.
