Starting in September 2019, the role would involve supporting 14 students aged 11-18 years of age. Work is highly individualised and provided on a 1:1 and small group basis. The focus of the HIRB is to help deaf students develop the communication skills, social skills and confidence required to achieve their full academic potential.

This Hearing-Impaired Provision supports students through an auditory oral approach, with a strong commitment to helping students develop their vocabulary, grammar and speech. Auditory oral communication requires pupils to use their residual hearing to understand and communicate using spoken language. The benefits of such an approach are numerous, supporting people with hearing impairments to communicate with family in their native language, interact with the general population without the use of an interpreter, and enable greater employment opportunities in the future. The teaching team also works closely with a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist who visits weekly to identify pupils learning targets and develop programmes of study.

Located within a large secondary school site supporting over 1000 mainstream students, Deaf Awareness training is provided to all new students and staff. Inclusivity is a core value that all staff at the school embody and provision staff liaise with mainstream regularly to ensure deaf students have access to both the curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

The HIRB has been purpose built to support deaf students with low ceilings and fitted carpets. All classrooms have sound field systems which are compatible with student's radio aids. Almost all students are equipped with hearing aid, FM systems and audiological equipment and are taught to manage and maintain their own equipment.

The HIRB team consists of a coordinator, two Teachers and a team of specialist Learning Support Assistants (LSAs). A range of intervention strategies are used including: speech and language therapy, precision teaching, reading schemes, talkboxes, games clubs, reverse integration and trips away.
