Have you taught young people at secondary age with challenging behaviours?
Do you have experience teaching pupils a range of subjects?

Tradewind are recruiting for an SEMH Teacher to join an dynamic and growing SEMH school in Bury. Full time and long term starting in September. Pay up to £150/day with the potential to turn permanent for the right person.

To join us and be successful in this SEMH Teacher role, you will need to:

  • Be subject to an Enhanced DBS Disclosure, Overseas Police Clearances (if applicable) and professional references checks.
  • Provide a CV with at least 10 years employment/education history included and any employment breaks must be explained.
  • Have the legal right to work in the UK.

The job:

This is an SEMH Teacher role for someone with experience teaching across a range of subjects, ideally you will be able to deliver one of the core subjects Maths, English or Science up to GCSE level. Pupils are working at upper KS2 and KS3 level in most areas although some are performing higher. You will be required to plan and deliver lessons, monitor progress and differentiate your work to the individual needs of each pupil while building strong relationships with pupils based on honesty, consistency and mutual respect. You will need to manage behaviour and support pupils with social and emotional development as well. Class sizes are usually no more than 6-8 pupils with TA support.

The school:

The school caters for young people at KS3 and KS4 age however pupils are working at lower levels than would be expected, as such the school are looking for a competent SEMH Teacher at KS2 or KS3 level who may have some experience teaching or tutoring up to GCSE in one of the core subjects. They foster a nurturing environment for both staff and pupils as well as promoting strong relationships between staff and pupils which helps to facilitate learning and progress despite challenges faced. The particular site that you would be working on follows an alternative and individualised curriculum including ASDAN and many vocational lessons so an SEMH Teacher that could contribute in this area in some way, such as sports, music, ICT, art, construction etc. would be a bonus but not essential.

The pupils:

All pupils are aged 11-16 and have an EHCP for SEND including Social, Emotional & Mental Health needs (SEMH) and challenging behaviours. Some of the young people have associated needs such as ADHD, Attachment Disorder, ODD or Autism. Behaviour can be physical as well as verbal at times.

As an experienced SEMH Teacher you will need to have very strong behaviour management skills and have a natural ability to engage with hard to reach pupils from varying backgrounds. You will need to be able to tailor your classes to meet the needs of each individual and plan, monitor and follow up accordingly. You will need resilience and perseverance in order to help pupils achieve.

While often challenging this is a great opportunity to make a real difference to young people with obstacles to learning and those from less fortunate backgrounds.
