SEN Teacher

Are you a SEN teacher with QTS, interested in making the ordinary possible for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs?

Tradewind are currently recruiting for a qualified Primary Teacher to work at an Ofsted 'Outstanding' special school in Camden, who are actively looking for a SEN Teacher to start with them in September 2021. The role is full time and long term, for the full academic year until and will most likely become permanent for the right candidate.

The school has been rated Ofsted Outstanding, providing support and education to pupils aged 4-14 with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs). This independent school is very small, providing for only 21 students currently. The vulnerability of these pupils is quite high and therefore there is a large staff to pupil ratio within the classrooms. The class sizes are small, of no more than 5 students per class with a class teacher and 1-2 Teaching Assistants. This school offers a therapeutic way to teaching/learning and therefore there are various therapists on-site to assist the teachers with lesson planning. Each child has an EHCP (Educational Health Care Plan) to work towards, so the successful teacher will need to be flexible and adaptable taking advice and guidance from the therapists.

You will be teaching across KS1 and KS2, teaching students all with SEMH and some other SEND including Autism and ADHD. Some of the pupils will have suffered trauma in their childhood, others may have behavioural needs and others might be struggling to manage their emotions as a result of their SEND. It is important that the successful teacher is nurturing, empathetic and creative to ensure engagement throughout the day. Teaching Assistants will be supporting within the class to assist with student engagement and to help manage any behavioural issues to ensure lessons run smoothly and students make progress.

The school are ideally looking for a qualified teacher with experience teaching in UK schools, strong behavioural management and a good command of written and spoken English and literacy skills. You must have SEN experience and experience of teaching children of different abilities.

Located in Camden, North-West London, the school has excellent transport links via the Northern Line, Jubilee Line, Metropolitan Line and the Overground.

Essential requirements:

  • QTS, qualified teacher status.
  • Experience planning and teaching lessons to primary aged students following the National Curriculum.
  • Experience with SEN - ideally SEMH or other complex needs.
  • Enthusiastic, resilient and positive approach.
  • Must have legal right to work in the UK.

  • Assess students' abilities and craft teaching plans
  • Adapt learning materials to students' needs
  • Keep track of and reflect on students' progress
  • Monitor children's behavioural patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed
  • Find engaging activities to teach skills
  • Manage classroom crises and resolve conflict
  • Prepare students for transition to the next grade
  • Inform parents about their children's performance and potential problems
  • Coach/mentor other professionals who work with children with disabilities
  • Collaborate with the support staff (e.g. school counsellors and therapists) to create holistic intervention plans
