SEN Teaching Assistant - Autism base

SANZA Teaching Agency are working exclusively with an Autism Centre attached to a mainstream school who are looking for an exceptional and caring SEN Teaching Assistant to support a small class of 8 students, all who have Autism (and some additional needs).

Personal Specification

For this post, you will need to be caring and supportive and committed to supportive learners with special educational needs.

You will need previous experience working with SEN children either in a voluntary or paid role. You will provide a willingness to contribute to lessons and overseeing. You must have the skills to confidently face challenging situations with a calm and collective approach.

Previous experience supporting students with Autism is an essential requirement of this role - and PECs or Makaton experience is also looked upon very favourably.

Many students have speech and language difficulties and younger pupils (Key Stage 1 classrooms are non-verbal (or have limited speech).

About the Role

Class sizes are all under 10, with members of staff (one lead teacher and 3 learning support assistants).

All children are on the Autism Spectrum, but the severity of their condition and their additional needs differ.

The school are looking for someone to commit to the role. They offer excellent training and support but need an educator who is willing to trial and then commit to a full academic year to justify their investment into you!

The School

This fantastic primary school located in the borough of Lambeth is easily accessible by public transport links.

The centre for pupils with autism provides a safe learning environment where pupils with a variety of needs can make good progress from their starting points. Staff are highly trained, committed and know each pupil's needs in detail. They use visual aids and signing to support pupils' communication skills. Staff design activities to engage and motivate pupils to work collaboratively and to learn new skills. For instance, learning to cook together is a favourite.

Pupils have weekly swimming and cycling lessons and excel in art. While they are taught for most of the time in the centre, staff look for appropriate times when they can be included in the mainstream provision.
