About the Role

As an L2 Teaching Assistant, you'll play a crucial role in supporting students with a range of learning disabilities and complex needs. Your work will involve providing tailored assistance that promotes independence, fosters communication, and enhances overall well-being within the educational setting. You'll be instrumental in creating a positive and supportive atmosphere where every student feels valued and can thrive. Key Responsibilities

  • Individualised Student Support: Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with Learning Disabilities, Complex Needs, PMLD, and Autism, adapting your approach to meet their specific educational and developmental needs.

  • Curriculum Access: Assist students in accessing the curriculum by adapting materials, providing sensory support, and implementing strategies to overcome learning barriers.

  • Communication & Social Skills: Support the development of communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) and social interactions, using a variety of strategies appropriate for each student's needs.

  • Behavioural Support: Implement positive behaviour strategies and support plans, helping students develop emotional regulation and manage challenging behaviours in a supportive manner.

  • Personal Care (where required): Provide personal care support as needed, always maintaining dignity and respect for the student.

  • Safeguarding: Uphold the highest standards of child protection and safeguarding, strictly adhering to school policies and national guidelines ("Keeping Children Safe in Education"). Promptly identify and report any safeguarding concerns.

  • Collaboration: Work effectively with teachers, SENDCOs, therapists (e.g., speech and language therapists, occupational therapists), parents/carers, and other professionals to ensure a holistic and coordinated approach to student support.

  • Promoting Inclusion: Actively contribute to an inclusive and supportive school environment where all students feel respected and are given opportunities to succeed.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

  • Qualifications: A relevant Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.

  • Proven experience working with children and young people (KS3-KS5) with Learning Disabilities, Complex Needs, PMLD, and/or Autism.

  • Familiarity with various communication aids and strategies (e.g., PECS, Makaton) is highly desirable.

  • Experience in implementing individualised education plans (IEPs) or support plans.

  • Exceptional patience, empathy, and resilience when working with diverse and complex needs.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and parents.

  • A proactive, adaptable, and flexible approach to supporting student learning and well-being.

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding principles and practices.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
