Becoming a Teaching Assistant is perfect for juniors to show confidence and their love of working with children. It is the ideal opportunity to support children in developing their knowledge, working closely with the pupils who might need extra help in class. The rewards of being a teaching assistant are of course having long holidays and flexible working hours. But ultimately you’ll be helping students get to their potential. If there is a large classroom full of students, it is quite easy for shy pupils who may be struggling to fall behind, and your job will be to support the teacher in giving a helping hand.

Do I need qualifications?

You don’t need to have any qualifications to become a teaching assistant. It would be an advantage if you have the relevant qualifications, as it would help you stand out from the crowd. Schools will favour assistants that have some form of experience in schools along with qualifications; it reassures them that they are choosing an experienced individual.

Below are some main requirements of a teaching assistant:

  • Good writing, reading and numeracy skills are a must, along with experience working with children.
  • Good GCSE grades – especially Maths, English and Science.
  • All schools will carry out DBS checks, which are a Disclosure and Barring service check. You must pass this to be able to work with children.

What can I do to improve my prospects?

Experience working in schools is high up on the priority list, so if you don’t have any experience, we would recommend volunteering at your local school. If you don’t have any qualifications and teaching seems like a career too far to reach there are a number of government Apprentice schemes that will help you get your foot in the door when it comes to teaching.
