Requirements to become a Classroom Teaching Assistant

  • You’ll be helping younger students with reading and writing tasks.
  • Providing support for the teacher especially in larger classes.
  • Helping the teacher run an efficient class and all students are receiving support.
  • Help to prepare lesson plans and get equipment ready for classes.
  • Organise school days and supervise students.
  • Attend teacher meetings and reviews every few months.

Do I need qualifications?


To become a Teaching Assistant you don’t necessarily need any qualifications, however, the relevant qualifications help you to stand out from the rest of the candidates. If you don’t have any of the relevant qualifications then work experience within a school is a must, schools will employ you if they trust you and having experience in a school builds that trust.


Below are some main requirements of a teaching assistant:

  • To be an entry level Teaching Assistant you need to have good writing, reading and numeracy skills.
  • You will need experience working with infants and children.
  • Most schools will require you to have good GCSE level qualifications, mainly in Maths, English, and Science.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are given by the school, which you must pass to work within schools.
