The Role: Pastoral Support Mentor (1:1 / 1:2)

As a Pastoral Support Mentor, you'll provide targeted, individualised support to students who may be facing social, emotional, or behavioural challenges. Working either one-to-one or with small groups (1:2), you'll be a trusted point of contact, helping students overcome barriers to learning, build resilience, and improve their overall well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide consistent 1:1 and 1:2 pastoral support to identified students, building strong, trusting relationships.
  • Listen empathetically to students' concerns and offer guidance and strategies for managing challenges.
  • Support students with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, helping them develop coping mechanisms and positive behaviours.
  • Monitor student attendance and engagement, identifying patterns and implementing interventions where necessary.
  • Liaise effectively with teachers, parents/carers, and external agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to student support.
  • Contribute to the development and review of individual support plans (ISPs) for students.
  • Help facilitate re-integration into mainstream lessons for students who have been disengaged.
  • Promote a positive school ethos and encourage students to make responsible choices.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions and interventions.

Essential Requirements:

  • Proven experience working with children or young people, particularly those facing social, emotional, or behavioural challenges.
  • Exceptional empathy, patience, and resilience in dealing with sensitive situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly and effectively.
  • A proactive and solution-focused approach to supporting student well-being.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection principles within a school environment (Enhanced DBS check required).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently (in 1:1 sessions) and as part of a wider pastoral team.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience in a school setting, or working within a pastoral, youth work, or counselling role.
  • Knowledge of common barriers to learning and strategies for overcoming them.
  • Relevant qualifications in youth work, counselling, or education support.
