Job Description

SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant - Thrapston & Surrounding Areas

Via Tradewind Recruitment

Tradewind Recruitment is proud to be working with a number of specialist schools and alternative provisions in Thrapston and the surrounding areas, and we are currently recruiting for an experienced SEMH Specialist Teaching Assistant to support pupils with complex social, emotional and mental health needs.

This role is ideal for a committed professional who thrives in a specialist environment and understands the importance of trauma-informed practice, consistency, and relationship-based support. Pupils you will be working with may display challenging behaviour, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, or difficulties with engagement, often linked to adverse childhood experiences or unmet additional needs.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils both inside and outside of the classroom. This may include providing 1:1 support, assisting with small group interventions, helping pupils regulate their emotions, and implementing personalised behaviour strategies. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to ensure pupils feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Previous experience working with SEMH needs is essential. This could include experience in specialist schools, PRUs, youth services, care settings, or other relevant environments. A strong understanding of behaviour management strategies, de-escalation techniques, and the ability to remain calm under pressure is crucial.

Working via Tradewind Recruitment, you will benefit from flexible opportunities across multiple schools, competitive pay rates, and access to ongoing professional development. Tradewind's specialist consultants are experienced in placing support staff into SEMH settings and will work closely with you to find roles that suit your skills and availability.

Key requirements include:

  • Proven SEMH experience

  • A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach

  • Strong behaviour management skills

  • Flexibility to work across Thrapston and nearby areas

  • An enhanced DBS (or willingness to apply)
