Job Description

Life Skills & PSHE Teacher
North Somerset

We are working in partnership with a forward-thinking secondary Pupil Referral Unit to recruit a committed and compassionate teacher to deliver Life Skills and PSHE to students in Years 8-11. This is a temporary role starting in February and running through to the end of the academic year, with flexibility for either a four- or five-day working week (excluding Wednesdays).

The Role

This position focuses on teaching small groups of secondary-aged students whose educational journeys have been disrupted and who benefit from a highly relational, personalised approach to learning. The curriculum is centred around Life Skills and PSHE, supporting young people to develop confidence, emotional literacy, resilience and practical skills for adulthood.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering engaging, meaningful Life Skills and PSHE lessons to Y8-Y11 pupils
  • Creating a safe, calm and structured learning environment
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students through consistency and positive interactions
  • Supporting social, emotional and behavioural development alongside academic progress
  • Working collaboratively with a wider multidisciplinary team to support each student's individual journey

About the Students

Students within the provision may present with:

  • SEMH needs and experiences of trauma or adversity
  • Disengagement from mainstream education
  • Emotional regulation challenges and low self-esteem
  • A need for clear boundaries, consistency and nurturing support

Small class sizes and strong staff support structures allow for a truly personalised and trauma-informed approach.

The Ideal Candidate

This role would suit a teacher who is:

  • Passionate about inclusive education and supporting vulnerable young people
  • Confident teaching PSHE, Life Skills or similar non-core subjects
  • Calm, reflective and emotionally intelligent in their practice
  • Skilled in behaviour management through relationships rather than sanctions
  • Flexible, resilient and solutions-focused

Qualified teachers are preferred, but strong unqualified or alternative provision experience will also be considered.

Why This Role?

  • Opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people's lives
  • Supportive leadership team with a strong values-driven ethos
  • Small classes and a focus on wellbeing over data
  • Flexible working pattern to support work-life balance
