About the Centre
The Centre for Autism in Camden supports 30 pupils aged 4-11 with Autism. Each classroom is staffed by one teacher and three to four Child Support Assistants, maintaining a strong adult-to-student ratio of 1:2 to ensure high levels of support.
The centre uses a therapeutic, multidisciplinary approach, with teachers working closely alongside specialists including:
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- A Music Therapist
Approach to Behaviour
The centre views all behaviour as a form of communication, including behaviour that may be challenging. Staff use a calm, empathetic 'low arousal' approach to support pupils.
In the short term, the focus is on de-escalating situations and helping pupils regulate. In the long term, the aim is to understand the root causes of dysregulation and support pupils to develop positive ways to communicate their needs. All CSAs are expected to adopt and follow this approach.
The Role
This is an active and engaging role, where much of the day will be spent supporting pupils through play-based learning. Staff are expected to participate in activities, games and learning experiences with the pupils.
Responsibilities may include:
- Supporting pupils in the classroom and during play-based learning
- Encouraging communication, engagement and independence
- Assisting with personal care, including toileting where required
- Supporting pupils during weekly swimming sessions at a local pool (staff are expected to enter the shallow pool to supervise and support pupils)
- Working closely with teachers and therapists as part of a collaborative team
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience working with children or young people, ideally those with additional needs or Autism
- Positive, patient and empathetic approach
- Comfortable working in an active, hands-on environment
- A sense of fun and enthusiasm for working with children
- Interest in developing a career supporting young people with additional needs
The centre prides itself on using evidence-based practices and therapies and offers excellent CPD opportunities. This is a rewarding and enjoyable role for someone who enjoys working as part of a team and making a meaningful difference in children's lives.
