Job Description
A full-time caretaker position is available at a small alternative provision school in St Albans, Hertfordshire, with an expected start date of 13th April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The role offers an annual salary ranging from £26,000 to £31,200, equivalent to £100-£120 per day, with PAYE and pension included. The post is paid across all 52 weeks of the year and includes 25 days of annual leave, along with paid bank holidays and time off over the Christmas period when the school is closed.
This position requires someone who can drive locally, as the working pattern includes split shifts and occasional travel to a second site in St Albans. A one-week paid handover will take place during the Easter break to support a smooth transition into the role. Although the working day is divided into shifts and does not require continuous on-site presence, the position remains full-time and is essential in maintaining a safe, secure, and well-kept school environment. There is also the possibility of the role becoming permanent for the right candidate in the following academic year.
The successful applicant will be responsible for opening the school site from 7:30am each morning and ensuring it is properly secured at the end of the day. Duties will include overseeing the safety of the premises, completing minor repairs and general maintenance tasks, and ensuring that the environment remains clean, safe, and welcoming. The role also involves keeping an eye on site security, reporting any issues, assisting with health and safety procedures, and occasionally travelling to support operations at the St Albans location.
Candidates should demonstrate reliability, strong timekeeping, and a trustworthy nature. Practical ability is important, particularly in carrying out basic maintenance and DIY tasks, along with the confidence to work independently and organise daily responsibilities effectively. Good communication skills and a professional, approachable attitude are essential, as is a willingness to adapt to flexible working hours. Holding a full driving licence would be advantageous due to the requirement to travel between sites.
In return, the school offers a competitive salary, consistent full-time employment with some flexibility in working hours, and a supportive, welcoming workplace. There is also a clear opportunity for the position to develop into a permanent role in the next academic year.
Applicants who are dependable, proactive, and take pride in maintaining a safe and efficient environment are encouraged to submit a CV along with a brief covering statement. The school is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and all successful applicants will be required to undergo appropriate safeguarding checks.
