Requirements to become a Classroom Teaching Assistant


  • Help children with reading and writing tasks.

Do I need qualifications?


Technically you do not need qualifications to become a Teaching Assistant. It would be beneficial if you have relevant qualifications that will help you stand out. There is a surge in the number of Teaching Assistant jobs in Birmingham and surrounding towns, and they want you. Schools tend to favour assistants that have good qualifications and having working experience in schools would be beneficial.


Below are some main requirements of a teaching assistant:


  • For an entry level teaching assistant, you will need to have good writing, reading and numeracy skills. You will need some experience working with infants.
  • Most schools will require good GCSE level qualifications, in particular for the core subjects, Maths, English, and Science.
  • The school will carry out a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks which you must pass.
