We are seeking Alternative Provision Support Staff to work with Key Stage 1-2 and Key Stage 3 pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in AP settings across Hull. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your sports expertise into education, engaging children and supporting their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and learning.

What You'll Be Doing

As part of our AP support team, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH and SEN needs.

  • Use sport, coaching, and physical activity to engage pupils, build motivation, and support emotional regulation.

  • Support behaviour and wellbeing using trauma-informed, restorative, and nurturing approaches.

  • Assist with learning and alternative education activities, adapting tasks and celebrating pupils' progress.

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, and AP coordinators to deliver tailored support.

  • Champion safeguarding and pupil wellbeing, ensuring safety and emotional support are always prioritised.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Background in sports, coaching, or physical education

  • Experience supporting children in education, AP settings, youth work, or community sports programs

  • Understanding of SEMH and additional needs in children

  • Ability to de-escalate challenging behaviours using calm, positive strategies

  • Awareness of safeguarding and child protection procedures

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Qualifications in Teaching and Learning Support, Childcare, Youth Work, or Mental Health

  • Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or other positive handling techniques

  • Experience supporting children with EHCPs or individual behaviour plans
