Science Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

The Role

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Science HLTA to join our supportive secondary school in Newham. The successful candidate will work closely with the Science Department to support high-quality teaching and learning, delivering targeted interventions and covering lessons where appropriate.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident HLTA with strong subject knowledge who is passionate about supporting students' progress in Science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned Science lessons to classes in the absence of the teacher

  • Provide targeted intervention and small-group support to raise attainment

  • Support students across KS3 and KS4 Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

  • Assist with lesson planning, preparation, and practical activities

  • Work collaboratively with Science teachers and department leads

  • Support students with SEND, implementing strategies from EHCPs where required

  • Promote positive behaviour, engagement, and independence

  • Contribute to assessment, feedback, and monitoring of student progress

  • Uphold safeguarding, health & safety, and laboratory procedures

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • HLTA status (or equivalent experience)

  • Strong Science subject knowledge at secondary level

  • Experience working in a secondary school setting

  • Confidence delivering whole-class lessons

  • Excellent communication and behaviour-management skills

  • A commitment to inclusion, safeguarding, and student wellbeing
