Operational Head of Maths
Tradewind Recruitment are looking for a full time Head of Maths to work at an excellent college in the centre of Hull, starting as soon as possible, and lasting until at least May Half Term, but potentially longer. You will be responsible for the operational performance of a large department in this non teaching role. Payment for this role will be between £30 and £45 per hour, with working hours of 8:30 until 4:00PM
The Head of Maths will provide strategic leadership and operational management of the Maths provision across the College. This includes GCSE and Functional Skills Maths, and any additional Maths qualifications delivered across 16-19 Study Programmes, adult provision, apprenticeships and Higher Education where applicable.
The successful candidate will drive outstanding teaching, learning and assessment, ensure high achievement and progress rates, and lead continuous improvement in line with College strategic priorities and national policy, including expectations set by Ofsted and the Education and Skills Funding Agency.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a clear vision and strategy for Maths across the College.
- Lead curriculum planning to ensure an ambitious, inclusive and coherent Maths offer.
- Monitor national developments in post-16 Maths and ensure compliance with funding and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to whole-college quality improvement planning.
Quality of Education
- Ensure consistently high standards in teaching, learning and assessment.
- Lead on the design, implementation and evaluation of schemes of work and curriculum intent.
- Monitor student progress, achievement and retention, taking swift action to address underperformance.
- Prepare the department for inspection and external quality assurance processes.
Performance Management & Staff Development
- Lead, manage and support a team of Maths lecturers and support staff.
- Conduct appraisals, lesson observations and performance reviews.
- Identify and implement targeted CPD to raise standards and share best practice.
- Support recruitment, induction and retention of high-quality staff.
Student Experience & Outcomes
- Drive improvements in GCSE and Functional Skills outcomes.
- Champion high expectations for attendance, punctuality and student conduct.
- Promote inclusive practice to support students with SEND and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Work collaboratively with pastoral and support teams to remove barriers to achievement.
Operational & Financial Management
- Manage departmental budgets effectively.
- Oversee timetabling and resource allocation.
- Ensure accurate and timely data reporting.
- Monitor funding compliance and audit requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with curriculum areas to embed Maths across vocational programmes.
- Engage with awarding organisations and external partners.
- Represent the department at internal and external meetings as required.
Person Specification
Essential
- Degree in Mathematics or a closely related discipline.
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE / Cert Ed).
- Experience of teaching GCSE and/or Functional Skills Maths in FE.
- Proven track record of improving student outcomes.
- Experience of curriculum leadership or management.
- Strong understanding of post-16 funding and accountability measures.
- Excellent data analysis and quality improvement skills.
- Strong communication and leadership capability.
- Enhanced DBS Disclosure, Overseas Police Clearances (if applicable) and professional reference checks
