SEMH Youth Worker / School Mentor

Location: Burnley, Lancashire

Hours: Full-Time, 08:30 - 15:30 (Monday to Friday, Term-Time Only)

Salary: £96.89 - £121.89 per day / annum (Dependent on experience)

Start Date: As soon as possible / September 2026

Are you an experienced Youth Worker, Community Mentor, or Sports Coach who excels at building connections with disengaged young people?

A specialised SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) School in Burnley is seeking a passionate and resilient Youth Worker to join their support team. This role moves away from traditional classroom assistance, focusing heavily on mentorship, behaviour modification, and emotional support for pupils who find mainstream education challenging.

If you want to transition your youth work skills into a structured school environment where you can see the daily impact of your guidance, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities as a Youth Worker:

  • Build Relationships: Establish strong, trusting, and positive connections with pupils aged 11-16 who have complex SEMH needs.

  • De-escalation & Support: Utilise your youth work background to defuse challenging situations, manage behaviour positively, and encourage emotional regulation.

  • Targeted Interventions: Deliver 1:1 and small group mentoring sessions focusing on self-esteem, anger management, and social skills.

  • Re-engagement: Act as a bridge between the pupils and their education, making learning feel accessible and achievable.

  • Collaboration: Support classroom teachers and the pastoral team by providing real-time feedback on pupil wellbeing and triggers.

What We Are Looking For (Job Requirements):

  • Experience: A solid background in youth work, residential care, youth justice, sports coaching, or community outreach. Experience working with vulnerable or at-risk youth is essential.

  • Character: A thick skin, a calm demeanour under pressure, and a non-judgemental approach. You must be someone who views a challenging day as an opportunity to reset and try again tomorrow.

  • Skills: Excellent communication skills, high emotional intelligence, and natural boundary-setting abilities.

  • Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in Youth Work, Social Care, or Sport are advantageous. Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or Price is highly desirable (though CPD training can be provided).

Why Choose This School in Burnley?

  • Inspirational Leadership: Work under a highly supportive management team that prioritises staff wellbeing and continuous professional development (CPD).

  • The Routine: Enjoy the stability of a school-hours schedule (no evenings or weekends) while keeping the rewarding nature of youth work.

  • Community Impact: Help shape the futures of young people directly within the Burnley community.

  • Career Growth: Excellent pathway for those looking to progress into therapeutic support, pastoral management, or specialised education roles.
