English Teacher - Second in Department

Tradewind is seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking Second in English to join a supportive and progressive secondary school located in the Smethwick/Birmingham area. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced teacher looking for leadership progression or an established second-in-department seeking a fresh, rewarding challenge.

  • Position: Full-Time English Teacher (Second in Department)

  • Location: Smethwick

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching & Learning

  • Plan and deliver comprehensive, high-quality English lessons tailored to the needs of learners across KS3 and KS4.

  • Utilise innovative teaching methods to inspire student curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for reading and writing.

  • Assess student progress, maintain accurate performance records, and provide constructive feedback to support academic development.

Departmental Leadership & Support

  • Support the Head of English in the strategic running, management, and leadership of the department.

  • Assist in designing, developing, and reviewing an engaging, high-impact English curriculum.

  • Lead on specific key stages, areas of the curriculum, or departmental initiatives (e.g., literacy intervention, KS3 coordination, or exam preparation).

  • Mentor, coach, and collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and foster a highly cohesive, supportive learning community.

  • Deputise for the Head of Department when required, including leading team meetings and managing departmental resources.

Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.

  • Proven track record of delivering excellent student outcomes in English at KS3 and KS4.

  • Experience-or a clear readiness-to take on leadership responsibilities, mentor staff, and drive curriculum development.

  • Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain).

  • Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Deep passion for education and a firm commitment to student success and inclusivity.
