Job Description

1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Outskirts of Wigan

Start Date: September 2026

Salary: £15 per hour

Contract Type: Starting part-time hours, progressing to full-time

About the Role

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a patient, nurturing, and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support a wonderful child starting their primary school journey in Reception. This position is based at a welcoming primary school on the outskirts of Wigan, starting in September 2026.

To ensure a smooth transition into school life, the child will initially start on a reduced timetable (mornings only). The role will naturally progress into full-time hours as the child settles and increases their time in the classroom. This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to make a profound difference from day one of a child's educational journey.

What the School Offers

A highly supportive EYFS team and an experienced SENDCO to guide you.

A warm, inclusive school community that values every child's individuality.

Excellent resources tailored to Early Years and sensory learning.

A clear, structured transition plan for the pupil to ensure your success in the role.

Key Responsibilities

Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a reception pupil with additional needs, helping them acclimatise to the school routine.

Implement personalised learning and behaviour plans as directed by the SENDCO and class teacher.

Guide the pupil through morning routines, phonics, and early years play-based learning.

Work closely with the class teacher to adapt activities, making the curriculum accessible and engaging.

Monitor progress and provide feedback to school staff and parents to support a smooth transition to full-time hours.

Requirements

Level 2 teaching assistant qualification or above.

Proven experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), ideally within an Early Years (EYFS) or Key Stage 1 setting.

Experience with specific needs such as Autism (ASD), speech and language difficulties, or global developmental delay is highly desirable.

A calm, encouraging, and highly resilient nature.

Flexibility: Ability to work morning sessions initially, with the commitment to move to full-time hours as the timetable expands.

An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or the willingness to apply for a new one through Tradewind).
