Job Description
We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Pastoral Head of Year to join our school in East Birmingham, starting as soon as possible.
This is a non-teaching pastoral leadership role, providing an excellent opportunity for an experienced pastoral professional who is passionate about improving outcomes for young people and creating a positive, inclusive school culture.
As a Pastoral Head of Year, you will take responsibility for the pastoral care, attendance, behaviour, safeguarding and wider wellbeing of a designated year group. You will work closely with students, families, staff and external agencies to ensure that every young person receives the support, challenge and guidance they need to thrive.
The Role
You will be responsible for leading the pastoral provision for your year group, developing strong relationships with students and ensuring high standards of behaviour, attendance and personal development.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and coordinating the pastoral support for an allocated year group.
- Monitoring and improving attendance, punctuality, behaviour and engagement.
- Building strong, trusting relationships with students and their families.
- Identifying students who require additional pastoral or safeguarding support and ensuring appropriate action is taken.
- Working closely with the safeguarding team, SEND team and other professionals to support vulnerable students.
- Managing pastoral concerns effectively and ensuring appropriate interventions are put in place.
- Supporting students with their personal development, resilience, wellbeing and readiness for the next stage of their education.
- Working collaboratively with Heads of Department, teachers and the wider pastoral team.
- Communicating effectively with parents and carers and managing challenging conversations professionally.
- Maintaining accurate records and using data to identify trends, evaluate interventions and drive improvement.
- Contributing to a calm, orderly and aspirational school environment.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has significant experience working in a pastoral, behaviour, attendance or student-support role within a school setting.
- Has experience leading or coordinating the pastoral provision for a group of students.
- Is passionate about improving the lives and educational outcomes of young people.Is confident dealing with challenging behaviour, attendance concerns and complex family circumstances.
- Has a strong understanding of safeguarding and the importance of keeping children and young people safe.
