Job Description
Looking for an education role that splits your day between creative classroom projects and hands-on outdoor learning?
We are seeking a versatile, proactive Outdoor & Classroom Learning Instructor / Support Assistant to join a supportive and forward-thinking Alternative Provision in Barnoldswick.
This role blends functional literacy, numeracy, and life-skills tutoring with outdoor education, practical bushcraft, horticulture, and physical activity. You will work with young people who have struggled in mainstream settings, including learners with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, neurodiverse profiles (ASC, ADHD), and school anxiety.
The Role & Responsibilities
Balance your timetable between supporting small-group classroom lessons and delivering outdoor/practical education tasks.
Plan and facilitate outdoor sessions such as basic bushcraft, environmental awareness, gardening, woodwork, and team-building activities.
Assist with functional skills, project-based work, and creative classroom learning tailored to individual pupil interests.
Act as a positive mentor and key worker for a caseload of pupils, helping build confidence, resilience, and emotional regulation.
Work in high-ratio environments (typically small groups of 3-5 pupils) alongside experienced educators.
Use restorative approaches and non-confrontational de-escalation techniques to support positive behaviour.
Candidate Requirements
Background: Experience working with children or teenagers in an Alternative Provision (AP), PRU, SEND school, youth club, or outdoor activity centre.
Skills: Confidence leading practical or outdoor activities (e.g., Forest School, gardening, sports, crafts) paired with solid literacy and numeracy skills to assist in class.
Mindset: Adaptable, calm under pressure, energetic, and happy to get your boots muddy in all weather.
Behaviour Management: Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or restorative practice is an advantage (or willingness to train).
Safeguarding: An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply for one immediately) and clear employment history references.
Location & Travel: Access to reliable transport is beneficial given the semi-rural location around Barnoldswick/Pendle.
What We Offer
Diverse Daily Routine: No two days are the same-enjoy the freedom of taking learning outside the traditional four walls.
Supportive Team: A close-knit staff team with clear pastoral structures and ongoing training.
Clear Career Pathway: Genuine long-term stability with the opportunity to transition onto a permanent school contract.
Competitive Pay: Weekly PAYE pay with standard term-time school hours.
