About the School & Partnership

In proud partnership with Tradewind Recruitment, we are working with a vibrant mainstream primary school in the Blackburn area seeking a dedicated Youth Mentor / Pastoral Worker to join our team starting right after the October half term.

We cater to children across Key Stages 1 and 2 (ages 4 to 11) who may experience Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, mild behavioural challenges, low attendance, or anxiety, and who benefit from targeted pastoral guidance to stay engaged in the classroom. Through our exclusive partnership with Tradewind, we ensure our staff receive exceptional local support, streamlined onboarding, and access to top-tier professional development.

The Role

As a Youth Mentor and Pastoral Worker, you will bridge the gap between academic learning and emotional well being in a bustling primary setting. You will work closely with vulnerable pupils across primary age groups, acting as a trusted role model, sounding board, and guide.

Your objective is to help young children navigate their big emotions, build positive coping strategies, develop social skills, and re-engage with their learning and classroom community.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1:1 and Small Group Mentoring: Build strong, trusting professional relationships with primary students, holding regular check-ins, lunch clubs, and emotional support sessions.
  • Pastoral Care & Early Intervention: Deliver targeted, age-appropriate interventions focused on emotional regulation, building friendships, resilience, and conflict resolution.
  • Behaviour Support & De-escalation: Utilise trauma-informed approaches and positive behaviour management strategies to support children through emotional peaks and maintain a safe, nurturing classroom environment.
  • Classroom & Activity Support: Support teaching staff during lessons, small-group interventions, or transition periods to keep students grounded and on-task.

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience: Proven experience working with children or young people (e.g., as a Youth Worker, Pastoral Support Worker, Teaching Assistant, Sports Coach, or Care Worker) ideally within a primary education or youth setting.
  • Attributes: High levels of emotional resilience, patience, warmth, firm and consistent boundary-setting, and a natural ability to build rapport with disengaged or anxious learners.
  • Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in Youth Work, Health & Social Care, Child Development, Psychology, or related fields are highly desirable.
  • Vetting: Must hold an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS certificate registered on the Update Service (or be willing to process one immediately through Tradewind).

Why Join Through Tradewind Recruitment?

  • Competitive, reliable pay processed weekly via PAYE.
  • Exclusive access to over 2,500 free CPD courses, webinars, and accredited training through The National College.
