Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and adaptable Functional Skills Maths and English Tutor to join a progressive Alternative Provision (AP) setting in Blackpool.

Starting on 2nd November 2026, this role is offered on a temp-to-perm basis, giving you the opportunity to trial the setting on a temporary agency/contract schedule with a clear pathway to a permanent contract. We are open to discussing both full-time and part-time working arrangements to find the right fit for your lifestyle and our students' needs.

In this role, you will deliver engaging, tailored functional skills sessions in English and Mathematics to Key Stage 3 and/or Key Stage 4 students who benefit from a supportive, non-traditional learning environment. Many of these young people require targeted intervention, patience, and creative teaching strategies to help re-engage them with education and build essential life skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan & Deliver: Design and facilitate functional skills Maths and English lessons (Entry Level to Level 2) tailored to the individual needs, academic abilities, and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) of AP students.

  • Re-engage Learners: Use creative, practical, and vocationally focused teaching techniques to break down barriers to learning and inspire disengaged or vulnerable youth.

  • Track Progress: Monitor, assess, and document student academic progress, setting clear, achievable milestones and celebrating small wins.

  • Positive Behaviour Management: Utilise strong de-escalation skills, empathy, and therapeutic approaches to maintain a calm, safe, and inclusive classroom atmosphere.

  • Collaborative Working: Work closely with support staff, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to ensure a holistic approach to student welfare and academic development.

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualifications: A teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, CertEd, QTLS, QTS) or a strong degree background with proven tutoring/teaching experience. Specialist subject knowledge in English, Maths, or both is essential.

  • Experience: Previous experience working within an Alternative Provision (AP), Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), SEN school, or delivering functional skills to disaffected learners is highly desirable.

  • Attributes: High levels of resilience, patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for transforming the lives of young people who struggle within mainstream education.

  • Compliance: Must hold (or be willing to apply for) an enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, and provide professional references covering the last 2 years.

Why Apply?

  • Flexible Options: Full-time or part-time schedules available to suit your availability.

  • Genuine Career Path: A temp-to-perm structure allowing you to transition into a secure, permanent position after a successful introductory period.

  • Impactful Work: Make a tangible difference in a supportive community setting in Blackpool.
