Tradewind Recruitment is currently seeking a dedicated, resilient and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist primary school supporting children with social, emotional and mental health needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of young children who may face challenges with emotional regulation, behaviour and accessing education.

The school is looking for someone who can build positive relationships, provide consistent support and help pupils feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

This is a full-time position, and applicants must be able to drive and have access to their own transport. There may also be opportunities for the role to become permanent through a temp-to-perm arrangement.

The Role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to primary-aged pupils with SEMH needs.

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with children, acting as a consistent and positive role model.

  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, self-esteem and developing positive coping strategies.

  • Use appropriate de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour calmly and safely.

  • Encourage engagement in learning, helping children overcome barriers within the classroom.

  • Support pupils with their academic, social and emotional development.

  • Promote positive behaviour, clear boundaries and a structured learning environment.

  • Work closely with teachers and other professionals to provide consistent, individualised support.

  • Help create a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience supporting children with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional needs.

  • Has experience working with primary-aged children or a genuine understanding of their developmental needs.

  • Is confident supporting emotional regulation and managing challenging situations.

  • Understands the importance of trauma-informed and relationship-based approaches.

  • Is calm, patient, resilient and consistent in their approach.

  • Can build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Is passionate about helping vulnerable children develop confidence and reach their potential.

  • Is a driver with access to their own vehicle.

  • Can commit to a full-time position.

Experience within a specialist SEMH school, alternative provision, residential childcare, youth work or a similar support setting would be particularly beneficial.
