How Many Hours Do Teachers Work In England?

Unlike other career paths, teaching is unusual in that the Department for Education keeps an official record of the number of hours worked. Running an annual survey, a sample of teachers in different types of schools and positions are asked to keep a record of their working lives.

According to results published in February 2013, hours spent teaching in a classroom take up the minority of a teacher’s workload. The average primary school teacher will spend 19 hours a week teaching, a secondary school teacher 19.6 hours a week in timetabled teaching and, secondary head teachers just 2.8 hours per week. Outside of these hours, time is spent on preparing lessons, marking work, general admin and, supervising children away from the classroom.

In the work diary results, the average primary school classroom teacher spends 23.8% of their hours working outside of the school week, with secondary classroom teachers spending a slightly lower 21.4%. When it came to head teachers, secondary heads are spending 21.5% of their time working outside of the school week and, primary heads are putting in more than 6 hours extra every weekend.

The work diary results highlighted that teachers work longer hours than the average 9am-3pm school day. Secondary headteachers were found to work the longest hours of any of the roles, working an average of 63.3 hours a week. Primary school teachers work on average 59.3 hours a week and, their secondary counterparts work slightly less for 55.7 hours a week.
