Google resources to help teachers educate from home

2020-03-23

Google has launched Teach From Home, a set of resources and guidance designed to help school teachers teach from home.

As a central hub of information, training, tools and tips from the world of Google for Education, the page focuses on how teaching remotely is possible via Google’s products.

Developed with the cooperation of UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, the tech giant has said the pages will continue to be developed to provide more support.

The Teach from Home toolkit also has an array of resources featuring guidance and advice, covering everything from home working to video calls, creating online assessments and other teaching essentials.

While the main Teach from Home site is in English, the toolkits can also be downloaded in German, Spanish, Italian, French, Danish and Polish.

What help is available?

Among the ideas on the page is guidance on how to create quizzes via Google Forms, a useful means of ensuring that pupils stay engaged while they are at home.

There are also details of how best to host a virtual classroom via Hangouts, providing teachers with a way of maintaining communication with pupils, of setting work, and of checking in on their health.

Google also suggests the use of Slides for a question and answer session whereby pupils can up vote certain questions and interact with the content being shown to them.

Teachers could also use Google Site to build a page that can host content for a class, such as worksheets, videos and information – providing pupils with an easy-to-access resource where they can access materials all in one place.

Google has also released a list of distance learning resources that are available from its technology partners on the Chromebook App Hub that can help enable teachers to deliver education from home.

To continually improve the resource, Google has also asked for feedback from teachers so that it can look into developing new tools to overcome some of the challenges they may be facing.
