Marked annually across the country in the first full week of June, Child Safety Week seeks to raise awareness among families of safer ways of living.
And arguably, as the world comes to terms with the global coronavirus pandemic, issues around safety have never been as important as they are today. Teachers have a pivotal role to play in maintaining a safe classroom or digital environment for their pupils.
Spreading key safety messaging
Organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), teachers can use the week to spread positive messaging around safety which can then be reinforced by parents at home.
2022 will focus on the theme 'Safety in Mind', which aims to raise awareness for families to always be keeping safety in mind, even under pressure.
From recognising everyday dangers that exist in the home to those out on the street, CAPT has an extensive set of resources available for both teachers and parents.
These include top tips on raising awareness around the hazards of poisonous products, hot liquids, roads, and a host of other risks, all designed to keep children safe in their day-to-day lives.
Options for teachers
Child Safety Week is an opportunity for teachers to share experience and knowledge so that children are aware of what to look out for.
There are three main areas to focus on, including accident prevention, road safety and online safety – the latter is particularly important at a time when many pupils are accessing resources on digital platforms.
Those in primary teaching jobs may wish to encourage their children to design safe living environments or could use resources that require pupils to identify risks and potential dangers from a range of different scenarios.
Secondary teachers can look into how elements of safety can be weaved into the wider curriculum using topics such as environmental care, sustainability, and health and wellbeing.
All three topics have featured heavily in news channels over the last 12 months, providing ample resources that children can explore for research CAPT has a wide range of free family-friendly content for parents and teachers, including fact sheets, activities and quizzes, which are available to download.
