Learning Disability Week Resources

2021-06-08

Learning Disability Week provides a valuable opportunity for SEN teachers to raise awareness of different learning disabilities among children of all ages.

The week – taking place from 14th -20th June 2021 – is supported by Mencap, the UK charity for those with learning disabilities.

The theme for this year is art and creativity, in recognition of how both have helped individuals with special educational needs and disabilities to stay connected and positive against the backdrop of challenges caused by the pandemic.

Mencap

As the charity driving the week, Mencap has numerous different resources to support those in SEN education, including an activity pack to help SEN teachers and parents get started.

Alongside some simple tasks which promote creativity, there’s also online guidance on tackling issues such as loneliness and social exclusion, which can impact those with learning difficulties.

Extensive SEN resources have been developed with assistance from the Department for Education too, providing further tools for teachers working in SEN education.

Further resources will be added for the week itself too, providing further tools for SEN teachers looking to drive better learning outcomes for their pupils.

Twinkl

With basic presentations and other resources, Twinkl has several tools which can be used to introduce Learning Disability Week in the classroom.

The resources here mainly focus on raising awareness of the challenges that those with SEND can face, providing a useful tool for SEN teachers wishing to disabilities in a considered and respectful way.
