Setting foot in a new classroom to start your ECT years might
seem daunting as you step into the unknown, but a little preparation is key to
making the most of your opportunity.
Here we’ve hand-picked some of the best resources to help
get ready for your ECT induction, designed to help you enter the classroom
feeling confident and ready to make your teaching career a success.
Know your school policies
As well as general guidance on what to expect from your
school, you’ll also want to check their behaviour management policies and see
how they relate to the methods you know.
In addition, we also recommend checking school procedures
around safeguarding, teaching and marking at the earliest opportunity, as it
can make settling in to your new role slightly easier.
Most of these should be available via your school, with
general guidance readily available online, including this from the Department
for Education on behaviour
and discipline.
The Early Career Framework
Developed by the Department for Education, the Early Career
Framework is designed to enable ECTs to focus on learning the essential
knowledge and key skills required for life in the classroom.
The tools can be accessed for use in self-study or within
school settings and it will be a requirement for all schools to offer all early
careers teachers a two-year induction based on the framework from September
2021.
Alongside professional guidance, there’s a plethora of
information here designed to help ECTs during their first year in the classroom.
ECTs will continue to be assessed using the Teachers’
Standards over the two-year induction period, so it’s recommended that you
also familiarise yourself with those standards.
Twinkl
From inspirational quotes to get you through tough moments
to handy tips and official government resources, Twinkl has a wide
support offering for ECTs.
There’s also a free support
pack for early careers teachers, designed by school staff to help others
through their ECT induction year.
In addition, ECTs can sign up to access downloadable content
including checklists, taster packs and guidance on teacher training and
professional development.
