Summer to mark end of school Covid bubbles

2021-07-07

School Covid ‘bubbles’ in English schools will cease from the end of the summer term, education secretary Gavin Williamson has announced.

Other measures to combat the pandemic will also be reduced, according to new guidance for schools from the Department for Education.

The guidance is expected to take effect from Monday 19 July, pending confirmation of a move to Step Four of the government’s recovery plan from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr Williamson said the idea of sending multiple pupils from a class or year group ‘bubble’ home following a positive case will not apply once the summer term finishes.

“Keeping children in consistent groups was essential to control the spread of the virus when our population was less vaccinated,” he told the Commons.

“We recognise that the system of bubbles and isolation is causing disruption to many children’s education. This is why we’ll be ending bubbles and transferring contact tracing to the NHS Test and Trace system for early years settings, schools and colleges.”

A change of approach

Hundreds of thousands of pupils across England have been forced to self-isolate at home after coming into contact with covid cases, with the latest guidance designed to limit any further disruption to their education.

According to the Department for Education, as many as 33 million days of school were missed by pupils in the autumn term of 2020 as they observed the need to isolate.

The move will allow school assemblies to take place, while pupils will also be able to mix freely during lunch and other breaks.

Mr Williamson said that the need for social distancing will also end, and that schools will no longer need to have staggered start and finish times.

Face masks will also no longer be advised for pupils and school staff in classrooms and other communal areas, although schools are expected to have outbreak plans – which may involve masks – should they have many cases to deal with.
