Do you have a mature mindset and a passion for working with children? If so, then a nursery job sounds just the job for you! You will be working closely with children and infants that are under the age of five, carefully analysing their daily development and helping them grow in the best possible way providing emotional and intellectual care. A benefit of working in a nursery is that you get to see babies and infant’s personalities develop on a day-to-day basis and knowing that you are making a positive difference in their lives.

Your abilities will be stretched and strengthen you as a person. It isn’t just the children who will learn on a daily basis but you will also gain knowledge and confidence in your ability. You will be following policies and guidelines set out by the nursery, keeping a high standard of maturity, and have an understanding of each child’s needs.

Roles included in a Nursery

  • Create a learning programme for each child and monitor their development.
  • Have a caring and relaxed manner when dealing with the children.
  • Contribute to parent’s evenings, training days and staff meetings whether it is in or after working hours.

  • Give a comfortable learning environment for all children.

Don’t have qualifications

Every nursery is different, some will be looking for qualified candidates, and others will be open to unqualified candidates. If you don’t have any higher qualifications, then you will need a strong background of good GCSE results and work experience within the childcare sector to prove that you have hands-on experience.

Requirements to work as a Nursery Nurse

  • Grade A* - C in GCSE level qualifications, particularly for the core subjects such as Maths and English.
  • Valid work experience in childcare with children and infants under the age of five.
  • A criminal record check called a DBS check will be carried out, and you must pass to be able to work with children.

Improving my chances of getting into a Nursery Role

Having basic qualifications or the relevant work experience are two attributes on your CV that employers in nurseries will be looking for. To improve your chances of getting the job having both will make you stand out from the crowd. Ensuring you have the correct experience will show your employer that you have been in a nursery or school environment before and had hands-on experience working with children.

If you want qualification under your belt we have a list of a few that might help you get a Nursery Role: National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) Diploma, Level 3 Diploma in Pre-School Practice, BTEC in Nursery Nursing, Level 2 Early Years Education and Childcare qualification, and having a First Aid Qualification is also desirable.
