SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Rossendale
Contract type: Full-time

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join our supportive team. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who experience social, emotional, and mental health difficulties, providing tailored support to help them access learning and thrive both academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs on a 1:1 basis or in small groups.

  • Assist the class teacher in creating a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.

  • Implement behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques when required.

  • Encourage pupil engagement, confidence, and independence.

  • Provide emotional and pastoral support, helping pupils to regulate their emotions.

  • Contribute to monitoring, recording, and reporting on pupil progress and behaviour.

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, parents/carers, and external professionals.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people, ideally in an SEMH, SEN, or behavioural support role.

  • Is patient, resilient, and empathetic, with strong relationship-building skills.

  • Understands safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.

  • Has good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.

  • Holds a relevant qualification (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, Team Teach, or equivalent).
