Job Description

Reading Intervention Teaching Assistant

Location: Preston
Salary: £90 - £110
Contract: Full-time

Our specialist SEN school is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant with phonics and early reading experience to join our warm, supportive and forward-thinking team.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to pupils with a wide range of needs, many of whom require extra support to build the foundations of literacy.

About the role

As a Phonics Teaching Assistant, you'll play a vital role in giving pupils the tools they need to become confident, fluent readers. Working alongside class teachers, literacy leads, and speech & language specialists, you will:

  • Deliver structured phonics programmes (e.g., Read Write Inc, Jolly Phonics, Letters & Sounds) to pupils with diverse learning needs.

  • Support children 1:1 and in small groups, helping them to practise blending, segmenting and decoding words.

  • Adapt phonics teaching to suit pupils with autism, speech & language difficulties, and other additional needs.

  • Use creative, multi-sensory strategies (songs, actions, visuals, games) to make phonics fun and accessible for all.

  • Track and record pupil progress, feeding back to teachers and parents so successes are celebrated and next steps identified.

  • Foster a love of stories and reading that extends beyond the classroom.

What we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Have experience delivering phonics interventions, ideally in a primary or SEN setting.

  • Are confident using a systematic synthetic phonics programme.

  • Bring patience, resilience and creativity to every lesson.

  • Can adapt your approach to meet a wide range of learning and communication needs.

  • Have previous experience supporting pupils with SEND (desirable, not essential).

  • Are passionate about giving every child the opportunity to succeed, no matter their starting point.

If you're enthusiastic about phonics and want to make a lasting difference in the lives of children with SEND, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today with your CV and join our dedicated team!
