Job Description
Are you an inspirational and resilient leader passionate about transforming the lives of vulnerable young people? Do you have the vision to lead an Alternative Provision (AP) that provides a vital lifeline and pathway to success for students who struggle in mainstream settings?
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Headteacher to strategically lead our Alternative Provision in the Burnley area. This is a critical leadership role for an ambitious professional who wants to create an inclusive, nurturing, and high-achieving environment where every student can build confidence and secure positive outcomes.
The Role: Strategic Leadership & Student Impact
The Headteacher will be responsible for the overall strategic direction, leadership, and operational management of the Alternative Provision, ensuring it meets the unique academic and SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs of all students.
Key Responsibilities:
Visionary Leadership: Develop and implement a clear, ambitious, and trauma-informed vision for the AP that aligns with statutory requirements and the needs of the Burnley community.
Operational Management: Oversee the day-to-day running of the provision, including staff management, financial oversight, resource allocation, and maintaining a safe, calm, and positive learning environment.
Curriculum & Standards: Lead the development and delivery of a differentiated, engaging, and relevant curriculum (including core subjects and vocational/therapeutic pathways) that drives high levels of student engagement and achievement.
Safeguarding: Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), championing a culture of vigilance, safety, and well-being, and ensuring all statutory safeguarding and welfare requirements are met.
Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain exceptional working relationships with parents, carers, local schools, external agencies, the Governing Body, and the wider Burnley community to secure positive pathways for students.
Staff Development: Recruit, manage, and inspire a highly effective team, promoting continuous professional development (CPD) tailored to AP/SEMH best practice.
Compliance & Inspection: Ensure the provision consistently meets all Independent School Standards (if applicable) and is fully prepared for successful inspections (e.g., Ofsted).
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will be a compassionate, dynamic, and tenacious leader with a proven track record of positively impacting vulnerable young people.
Experience: Significant senior leadership experience (Headteacher, Deputy, or Assistant Head) within an Alternative Provision, Special Educational Needs (SEN) setting, Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), or a challenging mainstream context.
Knowledge: Deep understanding of the challenges faced by students with SEMH and other complex needs, and expertise in effective strategies for managing behaviour and promoting mental health.
Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is highly desirable, though candidates with extensive and exceptional leadership experience in related fields will be considered.
Attributes: Exceptional communication, resilience, and the ability to inspire trust and confidence among students, staff, and external partners.
Why Join Our Burnley AP?
This is a profoundly rewarding role offering you the opportunity to lead a provision dedicated to truly changing the life trajectories of some of the most vulnerable students in Burnley.
Impact: Take the reins of a vital educational resource and make a tangible difference every day.
Salary: Competitive salary package up to £45,000, commensurate with your leadership experience.
Support: Strong support from a dedicated governing body and collaborative local networks.
