1:1 Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant
Location: Leigh,
Position: 1:1 Support (Year 1 Pupil)
Contract: Full-time / Term-time only
Start Date: Immediate / ASAP
Are you a patient, energetic, and dedicated educator looking to make a profound difference in a child's early school years?
A welcoming and inclusive Primary School in Leigh is seeking a specialised Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a wonderful child in Year 1. This role is ideal for someone who understands that "communication" goes far beyond spoken words and is passionate about breaking down barriers to learning.
You will be working closely with a young learner who has Autism (ASD) and ADHD. The pupil is currently non-verbal, requiring a staff member who is skilled in alternative communication methods and sensory regulation.
Key Responsibilities:
Communication Support: Utilising visual aids, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), or Makaton to help the pupil express needs and engage with the curriculum.
Behavioural Support: Implementing positive behaviour strategies tailored to ADHD, focusing on engagement, movement breaks, and task-splitting.
Sensory Integration: Managing a calm environment and using sensory tools to help the pupil remain regulated throughout the school day.
Academic Guidance: Adapting Year 1 phonics, literacy, and numeracy activities to meet the pupil's specific developmental level.
Collaboration: Working alongside the SENCO, Class Teacher, and external Speech and Language Therapists to track progress and implement EHCP (Educational Health and Care Plan) goals.
About You
We are looking for a candidate who is resilient, empathetic, and creative. To be successful in this role, you should have:
Experience: Previous experience working with children with ASD and ADHD (preferably within an EYFS or Key Stage 1 setting).
Communication Skills: Knowledge of non-verbal communication strategies (PECS, Makaton, or use of AAC devices) is highly desirable.
Personality: A calm "poker face" for challenging moments, a high level of patience, and a genuine joy for celebrating small wins.
