Assistant Headteacher
One-Year Fixed Term (Maternity Cover)
Start Date: July 2026 | Location: North London | Salary: Leadership Scale (dependent on experience)
A specialist secondary school in North London is looking for an exceptional Assistant Headteacher to join its Senior Leadership Team for a one-year maternity cover. The school supports young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, offering a safe, structured and nurturing environment where pupils can regain confidence, build resilience, and achieve both academically and personally.
The Role
Working closely with the Headteacher, you will play a key role in shaping the school's direction and leading day-to-day operations. This hands-on position involves promoting high standards of teaching, learning, behaviour, and inclusion, while supporting staff and pupils with complex needs.
Responsibilities
Support the Headteacher in school leadership and management
Lead on curriculum, teaching standards, and pupil progress
Champion behaviour and inclusion policies
Line manage middle leaders and teaching staff, offering coaching and guidance
Oversee safeguarding and pastoral systems
Contribute to school improvement and staff development
Build strong partnerships with parents and external agencies
Who We're Looking For
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Senior leadership experience, ideally in an SEMH or specialist setting
Knowledge of behaviour management, trauma-informed practice, and inclusion
Experience leading curriculum, assessment, and quality assurance
Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills
Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
