Teacher of English - Secondary Academy, Barnsley

A large and well-established secondary academy in Barnsley is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated Teacher of English to join its successful English department from September 2026. This is a long-term opportunity for a passionate educator who is committed to raising achievement and inspiring a love of literature and language among students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

The successful candidate will deliver engaging and challenging English lessons, contribute to the wider life of the academy, and support students in achieving their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality English lessons to students across KS3 and KS4.
  • Assess, monitor and track student progress, providing timely feedback to support achievement.
  • Differentiate learning activities to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND and EAL.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes excellent behaviour and engagement.
  • Prepare students effectively for GCSE English Language and English Literature examinations.
  • Contribute to departmental planning, moderation and curriculum development activities.
  • Attend staff meetings, parents' evenings and relevant school events.
  • Uphold safeguarding procedures and promote the welfare of all students.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, pastoral teams and senior leaders to support student success.

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
  • Degree in English or a related subject.
  • Experience teaching English at KS3 and KS4.
  • Strong subject knowledge of English Language and English Literature.
  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students of varying abilities.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of teaching, learning and behaviour.
  • Enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience within a secondary school or academy setting.
  • Experience teaching GCSE examination classes.
  • Knowledge of current curriculum developments and assessment practices.
  • Ability to contribute to extracurricular activities or enrichment programmes.
