Tradewind Recruitment are currently recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in the Corby area.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about young people's mental health, emotional wellbeing and personal development and wants to make a genuine difference to students who may experience Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

The school is looking for someone who can build trusting relationships with young people, provide consistent emotional support and help students overcome the barriers that may be affecting their education.

The Role

As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will provide targeted support to students who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural or mental health difficulties.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support to students

  • Supporting young people with SEMH needs, anxiety and emotional difficulties

  • Helping students develop emotional regulation and coping strategies

  • Building positive, trusting and professional relationships with students

  • Providing a safe, calm and supportive presence throughout the school day

  • Supporting students to engage positively with their learning

  • Helping students overcome emotional, behavioural and social barriers to learning

  • Encouraging confidence, resilience, independence and self-esteem

  • Supporting positive behaviour and helping students manage challenging situations

  • Delivering or supporting wellbeing, mentoring and intervention activities

  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, SEND teams and other professionals

  • Providing feedback on students' wellbeing, behaviour and engagement

  • Supporting students both inside and outside of the classroom

  • Helping to create an inclusive environment where students feel safe and supported

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has a genuine interest in mental health and supporting young people.

You may have experience as a:

  • Mental Health Teaching Assistant

  • SEMH Teaching Assistant

  • Teaching Assistant

  • Behaviour Mentor

  • Learning Mentor

  • Youth Worker

  • Support Worker

  • Residential Support Worker

  • Counselling or Psychology graduate

  • Pastoral Support Worker

  • Mental Health Support Worker

The successful candidate will ideally be:

  • Passionate about supporting young people's mental health and wellbeing

  • Patient, empathetic and non-judgemental

  • Confident building strong relationships with young people

  • Calm and resilient when dealing with challenging situations

  • Able to maintain appropriate professional boundaries

  • A strong communicator and active listener

  • Understanding of emotional and behavioural needs

  • Consistent and reliable in their approach

  • Committed to helping students build confidence and reach their potential

Previous experience working in a school is beneficial but not essential. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience supporting vulnerable young people or adults within mental health, care, counselling, psychology, youth work or residential settings.
