Tradewind Recruitment are currently recruiting for a compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Teaching Assistant to support young people with a range of social, emotional, mental health and additional needs.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about mental health, SEN and supporting young people to overcome barriers to their education. Previous experience supporting pupils with SEN, SEND or SEMH needs would be particularly beneficial for this position.

The Role

As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require additional support with their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, learning and engagement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support

  • Supporting students with social, emotional and mental health needs

  • Working with pupils with a range of SEN and additional needs

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with young people

  • Helping students regulate their emotions and manage challenging situations

  • Supporting pupils to overcome barriers to learning

  • Encouraging positive behaviour and engagement

  • Helping students develop confidence, resilience and independence

  • Providing a calm and consistent presence throughout the school day

  • Supporting students both inside and outside of the classroom

  • Working closely with teachers, SEN staff, pastoral teams and other professionals

  • Supporting interventions focused on wellbeing, behaviour and engagement

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is patient, empathetic, resilient and genuinely passionate about supporting young people's mental health and wellbeing.

Previous experience within SEN, SEND or SEMH would be ideal, although we would also be interested in candidates with relevant experience from:

  • Mental health support

  • Care or support work

  • Youth work

  • Residential childcare

  • Behaviour support

  • Teaching assistance

  • Psychology or counselling

  • Mentoring

  • Social care

  • Children's services

You will need to be confident building relationships with young people and able to remain calm and consistent when supporting students who may display challenging behaviour or struggle with emotional regulation.
