Job Description
A supportive and forward-thinking Alternative Provision (AP) based in Colne is seeking a reliable, empathetic Passenger Escort / School Transport Assistant to join their pastoral team on a full-time, temp-to-perm basis (40 hours per week).
Working closely alongside an experienced school minibus driver, you will play an essential role ensuring pupils travel safely, comfortably, and calmly between home, school, vocational learning placements, and off-site activities across Colne, Pendle, and the wider East Lancashire area.
This is an ideal opportunity for experienced Teaching Assistants, SEN Support Workers, Youth Mentors, or Care Assistants looking for steady daytime hours while making a tangible impact on vulnerable learners.
Key Responsibilities
Student Safety & Transit Supervision: Ensure all pupils board, travel, and disembark safely, verifying seatbelts and vehicle safety restraints are correctly secured before departure.
Emotional Support & Calm Atmosphere: Create a reassuring, positive, and structured environment on board to ease morning transit anxiety and set pupils up for a successful day.
Positive Behaviour Support: Apply patient, non-confrontational de-escalation techniques if students experience emotional dysregulation or peer conflict during the journey.
Pastoral Communication: Act as a professional link between families, carers, and school pastoral staff-relaying morning handovers, student welfare notes, or attendance updates clearly.
Vehicle & Welfare Checks: Assist the driver with end-of-route vehicle sweeps (belongings checks and ensuring the cabin remains safe and clean).
Candidate Requirements
DBS Check (Essential): Must hold an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the DBS Update Service (or be willing to apply for an immediate fast-track check through us).
Relevant Experience: Background supporting children or young adults with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism (ASC), ADHD, or additional learning needs (backgrounds in Care, SEN, Youth Work, or Classroom Support are highly regarded).
Approach: Calm, patient, and resilient under pressure, with natural de-escalation skills.
Reliability: Exceptional punctuality and dependability to maintain morning and afternoon transport routes.
Location: Commutable to Colne (BB8) / Pendle area daily.
(Note: A UK driving licence is not required for this position.)
Why Apply?
Clear Career Pathway: Genuine temp-to-perm contract leading to a permanent school contract for the right candidate.
Guaranteed Hours: Full-time, consistent 40-hour working week (Monday to Friday, daytime hours).
Work-Life Balance: Term-time schedule with no weekend, evening, or bank holiday shifts.
Professional Development: Access to free accredited CPD training modules in Safeguarding, SEMH Support, and Behaviour Management.
Weekly PAYE: Transparent weekly pay via PAYE with no umbrella company deductions.
