About the Role

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a skilled, reliable and enthusiastic Design & Technology (DT) Technician to support the DT department within a secondary school in Lewisham.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technician with a relevant degree and previous experience in an educational or technical environment. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting practical lessons, maintaining equipment and ensuring a safe, organised and engaging learning environment for students and teaching staff.

The position is offered on a supply basis, providing an opportunity to gain further experience within a secondary school setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing, organising and maintaining materials, tools and equipment for Design & Technology lessons.
  • Supporting teaching staff with practical demonstrations and classroom activities.
  • Ensuring workshops, machinery and equipment are maintained in accordance with relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Conducting routine equipment checks and reporting maintenance requirements.
  • Managing stock levels, ordering materials and maintaining accurate departmental records.
  • Assisting with the safe storage and handling of tools, materials and potentially hazardous substances.
  • Supporting students and staff with technical tasks where appropriate.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and well-organised working environment.

Essential Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

  • A degree in Design & Technology, Engineering, Product Design or another relevant technical discipline.
  • Previous experience working in a DT Technician role or a closely related technical position.
  • Practical knowledge of workshop tools, machinery, materials and safety procedures.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teaching staff.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • The ability to meet relevant pre-employment safeguarding and background-check requirements.

Previous experience supporting a secondary school DT department would be particularly advantageous.

Pay and Progression Opportunities

The hourly pay rate for this position ranges from £14.00 to £17.00, depending on the candidate's relevant experience, technical expertise and the responsibilities associated with the assignment.

The following factors may contribute towards securing a higher hourly rate:

  • Relevant Experience: Candidates with substantial previous experience as a DT Technician, particularly within secondary schools, may be considered for rates towards the upper end of the advertised range.
  • Specialist Technical Skills: Demonstrable expertise in workshop machinery, CAD/CAM technology, equipment maintenance and relevant health and safety procedures may support a higher rate.
  • Increased Responsibilities: Taking on additional duties, such as coordinating workshop resources, overseeing equipment maintenance or supporting departmental health and safety processes, may justify a higher rate where agreed.
  • Professional Development and Progression: Candidates who develop their technical skills, demonstrate consistent performance and progress into more responsible assignments may become eligible for higher-paid opportunities.

Pay rates are determined by the requirements of each assignment, the candidate's suitability and experience, and the agreed terms of engagement. Progression to the maximum advertised rate is not automatic or guaranteed.
