Tradewind Recruitment is currently seeking a qualified and experienced Secondary School English Teacher to work within secondary schools across Southwark. We are looking for enthusiastic, knowledgeable and committed teachers who can inspire students, deliver engaging English lessons and contribute positively to the wider school community.

Whether you are looking for flexible daily supply work or are interested in securing a longer-term teaching position, this is an excellent opportunity to develop your teaching experience, build relationships with local schools and progress professionally.

The Role

As a Secondary School English Teacher, your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging English lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4.

  • Teaching English Language and Literature in line with the national curriculum.

  • Maintaining high standards of behaviour and classroom management.

  • Differentiating lessons to meet the needs of students with varying abilities.

  • Assessing student progress and providing constructive feedback.

  • Creating a positive, inclusive and stimulating learning environment.

  • Working collaboratively with teaching colleagues and support staff.

  • Contributing to departmental activities and wider school responsibilities where required.

Pay and Progression

Daily Supply: £150 - £170 per day

Our daily supply rates are determined by relevant teaching qualifications, previous classroom experience, teaching performance and the level of responsibility undertaken.

Teachers joining us can initially expect to earn within the £150-£170 daily rate, with opportunities to progress towards the higher end of the scale.

Progression towards £170 per day may be supported by:

  • Demonstrating substantial previous secondary school teaching experience.

  • Showing consistently strong classroom management and lesson delivery.

  • Building a positive track record of reliability, professionalism and feedback from schools.

  • Taking on additional responsibilities, such as supporting departmental planning, mentoring colleagues or contributing to curriculum development, where appropriate.

  • Demonstrating the ability to work independently and confidently across different year groups and abilities.

  • Developing strong working relationships with schools and taking on more demanding or specialist teaching assignments.

Rate progression will be considered individually, taking into account experience, suitability for the assignment and the responsibilities agreed with the school and Tradewind Recruitment. The higher rate is not automatic and is subject to agreement.

Long-Term Teaching Opportunities

For teachers securing a longer-term placement, remuneration will be paid in line with the school's applicable Main Teacher Pay Scale (MPS), with the salary point determined by relevant qualifications, recognised teaching experience and the terms of the placement.

This provides an opportunity for teachers seeking greater continuity and the potential to become an established member of a school's English department.

  • A relevant degree in English or a closely related subject.

  • A recognised teaching qualification, such as PGCE with QTS, or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.

  • Previous experience teaching English within a UK secondary school setting.
