Sheffield is a city with strong industrial roots. Having garnered an international reputation for steel production during the Industrial Revolution – hence its nickname 'Steel City' – it has undergone extensive redevelopment in the 21st century.

It’s the only UK city that includes part of a national park in its boundary, as the Peak District National Park, characterised by moorland and rocky outcrops, can be found to the west. With more than two million trees and around 650 green spaces, it was once claimed to be England’s greenest city.

The Kelham Island Museum details the region’s industrial heritage while the Millennium Gallery houses metalwork and art from around the world.

The city is also home to the world’s oldest football club – Sheffield FC – while the World Snooker Championship is held annually at the Crucible, one of three auditoriums that complete Sheffield Theatres, the largest complex outside London.

Music plays a big part in city life, with the Arctic Monkeys and Pulp among those also to have originated in city.

The Grin Up North Sheffield Comedy Festival, the Sensoria Film and Music Festival, and The Tramlines Festival are among the regular events held in the city.

There’s also a lively bar and club scene, with a large number of pubs serving beers and ales from local breweries.

Meanwhile Meadowhall shopping centre is among a number of retail parks found away from the centre of the city.

There are around 160 primary and secondary schools in the region, of which around 10 have sixth forms.
