Troops to Teachers programme for UK teaching jobs launched

The skills and experiences learned by members of the service personnel can be invaluable. In order to make the most of the skills in armed forces leavers, the government has launched the Troops To Teachers Programme. Aimed at recruiting talented service leavers for UK teaching jobs, this new scheme is designed to make it easier for highly-skilled ex-servicemen to become teachers.

Armed Forces Leavers Get Qualified For UK Teaching Jobs

The Troops to Teachers programme was launched in June 2013. Developed by the Department of Education in partnership with the MOD’s resettlement contractor CTP (Career Transition Partnership), the scheme is in association with outstanding university and school training providers, and led by the University of Brighton.

The Troops to Teachers programme is a fast-track teacher training programme for eligible service leavers. The scheme will train military service personnel to become teachers while offering great benefits including salaries, bursaries and bespoke training.

From September 2013, ex-servicemen with a university degree will be able to enrol in the UK teaching jobs scheme. They will provide personnel with excellent teacher training and £2,000 bursary uplifts. After 2014, those who do not have a degree will also be able to apply for the training. This route will take 2 years, and will be a school-based, salaried training programme.

The teacher selection process will be rigorous to ensure that only the best are selected. Education Minister, David Laws said “We want to capture the ethos and talents of those leaving the armed forces and bring this experience into teaching. We know that our highly-skilled servicemen and women can inspire young people and help raise educational attainment.” Also commenting on the scheme, Defence Secretary, Phillip Hammond said, “A career in the armed forces provides skills and experience you cannot gain anywhere else, and I would encourage anyone leaving the services to take the opportunity to pass on their invaluable knowledge and instil respect, discipline and pride in the next generation.”
