Functional Skills Teaching Assistant

About the Role
We are looking for a caring, adaptable, and motivated Functional Skills Teaching Assistant to join our dedicated team. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children and young people with a range of special educational needs (SEN), helping them develop essential English, Maths, and ICT skills in line with Functional Skills frameworks.

In this role, you will deliver and support engaging, practical lessons tailored to individual learning needs, while also working closely with teachers to create a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver Functional Skills lessons (English, Maths, ICT) adapted for learners with a range of SEN.

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support, promoting independence and confidence.

  • Assist teachers with classroom activities, behaviour management, and differentiation.

  • Use creative approaches and multisensory resources to make learning accessible and enjoyable.

  • Support students in developing life skills, communication, and social interaction.

  • Keep accurate records of progress, achievements, and individual support needs.

About You

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEN (essential).

  • Teaching qualification (PTLLS, AET, or equivalent) desirable, but not essential for TA roles.

  • Strong understanding of Functional Skills or willingness to train.

  • Patient, empathetic, and resilient, with excellent communication skills.

  • A positive approach to supporting learning, behaviour, and wellbeing.
