About the Role
We are seeking passionate and dedicated Functional Skills Tutors with a specialism in either Maths or English to join our alternative provision (AP) secondary school based in Towcester.
You will be delivering Functional Skills qualifications (Entry Level to Level 2) to students in Key Stages 3 & 4, helping them to gain essential literacy and numeracy skills that will support their progression into further education, apprenticeships, or employment.
This is an opportunity to make a real impact, teaching small groups of students in a supportive and nurturing environment, where building confidence and fostering engagement is just as important as delivering curriculum content.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging and accessible lessons in Maths and/or English, adapted to learners with varying abilities.
Identify and assess students' starting points and differentiate learning accordingly.
Embed practical, real-world relevance into lessons to support vocational learning pathways.
Monitor and track student progress; maintain accurate records and contribute to reports.
Support with behaviour, attendance and emotional wellbeing, creating a positive learning atmosphere.
Contribute to curriculum planning and resource development.
Liaise with the Centre Manager, parents/carers, and external bodies regarding student progress and accreditation.
Person Specification
A recognised qualification in teaching or tutoring Functional Skills (or strong experience delivering Maths/English at secondary/post-16 level).
Experience working with learners with additional needs or in alternative settings is desirable.
Confident classroom or small-group practitioner; creative and flexible in approach.
Strong knowledge of Functional Skills curriculum and assessment requirements.
Committed to inclusive practice and building confidence in reluctant learners.
Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
