Job Description


About the Role:

Tradewind Recruitment is working closely with a dedicated Autism Specialist Secondary Provision in Newham to recruit caring, resilient, and proactive Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) to join their supportive team.

This specialist setting supports students aged 11-19 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including both verbal and non-verbal learners, some of whom may display challenging behaviours related to their needs.

We have both full-time and part-time opportunities available, making this a flexible and rewarding opportunity for candidates with a passion for supporting young people with complex needs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with autism in accessing learning across the curriculum

  • Provide one-to-one or small group support, following individual learning and behaviour plans

  • Use a range of communication methods, including PECS, Makaton, and visual supports

  • Promote independence, emotional regulation, and positive social interaction

  • Assist with sensory activities and structured routines

  • De-escalate challenging behaviour calmly and follow school strategies and safeguarding procedures

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to deliver consistent, high-quality care


About You:

  • Experience supporting young people with autism and/or challenging behaviour

  • Understanding of communication differences and sensory needs

  • Calm, patient, and compassionate approach

  • Team player with strong communication and observation skills

  • Confident to manage behaviour positively and promote engagement

  • Experience with PECS, Makaton, or Team Teach training is desirable but not essential

  • Start Date: ASAP

  • Hours: Full Time or Part Time (Monday to Friday, school hours)

  • Contract: Term Time Only - Ongoing

  • Location: Newham
